Goals 2013

It's hard to imagine laying out yet another list of goals. Goals for this house, for the blog, for me. But, it's a tradition around here, so here we go...

{Home Goals}
1. The Dining Room
It's funny, yesterday I was discussing this with Mr. DD and he said, rather matter of factly, "you and I have a totally different definition of done". To him, the project is complete - wall paper removed, walls repaired, board and batten wainscoting installed, painted. Done.
But, I see so much more - window coverings sorted, wall hangings found and hung, furniture placement, etc. I mean, when is a room really done, anyway?

2. The Study
The Mr. works from home occasionally. And, when he does, this is where it happens. A while ago we invested in large, manly, leather topped desk, which is definitely staying, but otherwise the sky is our limit. Honestly, this room has been on the makeover list 4 years running. I'm hoping this is it's year!

3. The Master Bath
Even typing the words 'master bath' make me giggle. This room is so far from being a master it's downright comical. But, that being said, we use it daily and wouldn't it be nice to not be so cavelike? Yes, I think so.

4. The Family Room
The family room is a room that I haven't shared too much on the blog. I remember a friend and avid reader of the blog visiting this summer for the first time and when the tour hit the basement, she said "wow, I didn't even know this was down here". So yes, it's in the basement, which I love, have always wanted in a home, and think makes it super cozy, but good pictures it does not make. Plus, there's not much spectacular about it. But, hopefully we'll change that this year.

5. The Rear Garden {Back Yard}
Last year, I talked all about doing a raised bed in the back yard with a pergola covered in wisteria (check it out here). It was going to be beautiful. A real destination, but alas, funds and time ran short and it didn't happen. Perhaps this year...

6. The Front Yard
The front yard, oh, the front yard. Where to even start? We've put it off, and put it off, year after year. Mostly because it's totally acceptable, but devoid of color and interest, to be frank. This could be it's year of change. Fingers crossed.

{Personal Goals}
1. Learning to be happy in my home
It's so easy to covet thy neighbor, or their home, or whatever they may have that you don't. But this year, I want to focus on loving what I have. I realize this is a bit vague, but I've got lots of ideas to back this up and trust me, by the end of this year, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

2. Learning to balance blog/mommy/life
I'm a stay-at-home Mom to two little ladies, working to give them the best childhood I can, all the while trying to create my own niche in the big 'ol blogsphere. It can be tricky. I have my ups and my downs. This year, I hope to find a better balance.

3. Learning that it can't and shouldn't always be perfect
This is a hard one for me. I grew up in the generation of perfect homes, perfect families, perfect meals. I thought and sometimes still think that it has to be this way. But, the more I take on, the more I realize it can't always be perfect. And it shouldn't always be perfect - not if I want to keep my sanity! Toys everywhere, crumbs on the floor, dishes on the counter, burnt and/or cold dinners - it all happens, this is life. And sometimes you just have to embrace it.

So, that's about it for me this year. Should be pretty exciting. If you  don't want to miss a thing, sign up to get DD posts right to your inbox.

Great goals for the new year! I definitely hope you can do some raised beds and the wisteria! I have found that cultivating a vegetable garden is so fun and therapeutic. Oh, and I love the tile floor in your master bath- that is fantastic!
