If you follow me on Instagram you know I was packing for a 26 hour, kids-free getaway to Charleston, SC and that we arrived on Saturday afternoon. But not much else. With such a short, but sweet marriage appreciation trip planned we wanted to make the most of our time in Charleston and with each other. No computers, iPads, or social media. Just time spent touring, eating and relaxing.
Our most favorite part of touring Charleston was discovering all the hidden alleys and passageways throughout the city. Allowing tiny glimpses into homes and their private gardens. Most gardens weren't large, but that didn't keep the owners from taking real pride in their spaces and making every inch count.
Like tiny outdoor rooms, welcoming you home.
The foodie culture of Charleston was also a big draw. The Shrimp and pepperjack BLT at Cru Cafe did not disappoint. This little restaurant was bustling and we were very lucky to walk right in and score a spot at the communal table near the kitchen.
Finding a hotel in the historic old town that accepted only a one night stay over a weekend was no easy feat. We lucked out at the Jasmine House Inn because the previous guest booked Thursday and Friday night. The details of this 18th Century Greek Revival Home were truly amazing! A real treat.
After lunch we strolled to the waterfront to walk the pier and promenade but also to wonder the quaint historic residential areas. Away from all the hustle and bustle of the market, restaurants and shops the area really captured our hearts. And offered a lot of inspiration for our own outdoor areas, porch and home.
Every available inch overflowed with potted plants, leading to secret gardens tucked into small green spaces. It really was the highlight of the trip.
John's new fitbit registered over 20,000 steps that day. And I believe it. We walked and walked and walked, trying to take everything in.
We really splashed out over dinner and booked in to McCrady's. They specialize in inventive farm fresh food and we sampled flavors and preparations we'd never had before. Highlights for me included a pickled clam and begonia salad. Amazing.
The next morning, it was off for more touring before the rain hit.
Welcoming porches run the length of most historic homes. Fans, lanterns and rocking chairs found a place on most of them. Again, so many ideas to bring home and incorporate to our own space.
We loved the green risers of the sweeping staircase and all the wrought iron details on this old Southern charmer.
We closed out our visit to Charleston with brunch (what a luxury!) at Magnolia's. Shellfish over creamy grits was a restaurant favorite, but my personal favorite was the fried green tomatoes. Oh my goodness. I haven't eaten so well in … ever.
Charleston has forever stolen a piece of my heart. The winding streets, full of history. The historic homes covered in charming architectural details. The food. The shopping. The inspiration. And the peak into a slower, Southern style of living steeped in tradition. I can't wait to go back.
until next time,
