The Project that Almost Did Me In {aka stenciling my powder room}

In my February plan post, I mentioned I wanted to do some work in our powder room. I'd always thought I wanted to have a statement paper in my half bath, but papers are expensive and not for the commitment-phobic.

The next best thing, I thought, would be to stencil it. I'm not talking about the little stencil borders, I'm talking about an all over bold, graphic pattern - something that might give the impression of wall paper.
These types of stencils are all over blogland and true to form, I assumed my normal mantra: if I've seen it done, surely I can do it too. Well, let me just tell you, this is the project that nearly had me hang up my beloved DIY hat. Whoever said stenciling is easy, clearly never worked in a small space with lots of corners and moldings.

Here's the brief play by play: It started off easy enough,

Then started to get a bit trickier as I neared the corners,

And THEN became almost laughable when the corners met up with the moldings.

At this point, I realized that the stencil was NOT going to be perfect. Once I came to terms with that, the whole project became much more manageable. In the end, I had to cut the stencil to make smaller pieces that would fit my space. Whatever works, right?

So, it's done.
I thought it would only take me an afternoon. But, in reality, it was a two day project. Mostly because I had to keep walking away because it was SO frustrating, but also because my girls were not wanting to nap! {also very frustrating.}

Is it perfect? No.
Did I go back through with a craft brush to fix some of the bigger areas? You bet I did.
Did I get crazily obsessed over it? I tried not to.
Does it look like wallpaper? Maybe from a distance, but certainly not up close.
Am I still happy with the outcome? Yes, I am.

I've been thinking that stenciling seems really hard, so it is refreshing to hear that it might not be a snap. BUT, yours turned out so beautifully I still might try it ;)

LOVE this - so impressed. A statement, indeed, and a great space for it.

I've been wanting to stencil my dressing room now for several years. Wanting. I quickly realized I needed several, never could make up my mind about the pattern, then thought "too many drips." But yours turned out great and having that huge stencil would be a big help. But it looks way better than wallpaper IMO - the hand work on it makes it lovely. Worth the work, I think. You have me re-evaluating. LOL. Jane

Hi Liz, I feel your pain! I am currently working on stenciling my powder room, too. I have a beautiful stencil and it is easy to work with but doing corners is not so easy even if the instructions tell you differently. I love the look of my walls and it really does look like wallpaper even up close. I found the main trick is use a sponge roller and go lightly with the amount of paint applied with the roller. I chose to use a much lighter version of the wall paint to do the stencil and love it. I've just gotta get busy and finish it. Yours looks fabulous to me. I like the bold color and print. You are welcome to put this project on my party tonight if you would like to share it. Details on my blog.--------- Shannon

Ohhhh I really love the outcome. This post is also very helpful as I am helping a friend stencil a room this weekend.
BTW LOVE the bathroom curtain/shade. Where did you find that? The golden ribbon.. love!

Well, since I have very little patience, I'd probably need a cocktail perched on the toilet to get me through this! It does look great though so I am considering the dreaded stencil - but must get myself to the liquor store first!
